5 Android Screen Recording Apps To Record your Screen Activity

From screencasting your Android screen to an Apple TV to enabling task automation through apps, an Android device is a useful one that’s slowly becoming an essential must-have. Unfortunately, in the past, it has always been difficult to do screen recording on Android, as you’d need to get your device connected to a PC for it to work.

However, that is no longer the case, because Google now has screen recording support for the KitKat version of Android. This makes it easier for developers to create apps for native screen recording purposes.

Screen Record (for KitKat+)

We’ve done the work and compiled a list of apps that you can download to do screen recording on your Android. Try out any one of these 5 Android screen recording apps to help you record any of your Android screen activity to be saved as a video file. Do note that all of these recording apps require a rooted device to function.

1. Rec.

Rec. is an Android screen recording app with an elegant interface. Once you open the app, all you need to do is adjust the bit rate and duration according to your preference before you tap on ‘Record’ at the bottom to start.

You can also enable audio recording and even name your recording before beginning as well. Once you tap on Record, the app will start counting to 10, so that you’ll have enough time to prepare before your device starts recording.

Rec.

You can stop the recording by tapping on ‘Stop’ in the app, using the notification bar, or simply by turning your device screen off. The free version limits your recording to only 5 minutes and the audio recording only lasts for 30 seconds. If you’d rather not limit yourself, you can always upgrade to the paid version within the app.

2. Screen Recorder For KitKat

This is a simple screen recording app that you can download for free through the Google play store. It includes features like setting up your preferred resolution, adjusting your bitrate, countdown and the ability to rotate the video. The app allows you to record for up to 180 seconds. You can start recording by tapping on the Record button when you’re inside the app.

Screen Recorder For KitKat

While recording, you’ll be able to see your recording status via your Android notification bar. A sound and vibration notification lets you know when it has finished recording. All of the recordings will be available in your /sdcard/ScreenRecorder folder.

3. SCR Screen Recorder Free

SCR is another screen recorder app that allows you to do free screen recording for up to 3 minutes, with a watermark added to your video. The app doesn’t have a main interface. Instead it comprises of an overlay of a small rectangular box that will includes 3 buttons: one for recording, another for accessing settings, and a button to exit the app. Once you start recording, you will notice an overlay at the right side of your screen indicating that the app is currently recording.

SCR Screen Recorder Free

To stop the recording, you can turn off your screen for 2 seconds or just re-open the app again. There are plenty of features you can try from the app settings page, such as choosing your video encoder, resolution, image transformation using GPU or CPU, indicating bitrate, choosing a frame rate (which is limited by hardware capabilities) and many others.

4. Screen Record (for KitKat+)

Screen Record is a screen recording app that simply allows you to decide the duration and name your recordings without any extra features. In the app, you can specify your recording duration to up till 120 seconds on the free version of this app. The app will keep on recording until that time is over once you tap on ‘Start Recording’.

Screen Record (for KitKat+)

Your recordings will be available in the /sdcard/ScreenRecord/ folder and there won’t be any watermark added to any of your videos. You can also opt for the paid version if you’re interested in increasing the 2 minute limit into a maximum of 10 minutes of recording at a time.

5. Shou

Although Shou is still in its beta phase, this app promises a lot of features that most recording apps currently don’t offer. You can use Shou to do screen recording with stereo sound, mirror your device screen to any Miracast or AirPlay enabled devices, and even take a screen shot simply by shaking your Android device. You need to join their Google+ community before you can download the app from the Play Store.

Shou

There are no time limits on a recording using Shou. You can select your source engine, encoding engine, orientation, resolution, bitrate and it also enables you to show touches all from within the apps video settings page. Don’t be afraid of the number of permissions it requires, as the app carries a lot of other features that requires such permissions.

Make Elements On Your Site Draggable With Draggabilly.js

There’s a lot of tutorials out there on how to make things draggable in a web page. jQuery is one of the easiest ways. You don’t even need the jQuery UI, just a little help from the mouse direction function and perhaps some optional handling. But what if you don’t want to touch any jQuery code yet still want to make things draggable? Then, draggabilly.js is the right tool for you.

With Draggabilly.js, you can make any element on a web page draggable. You can customize the behavior of the draggable element like adding grid movement, binding event listeners to events, limiting the movements to only the x- or y-axis and much more. It also supports various browsers, IE8+ and even multi-touch mobile browsers.

Getting Started

To get started, you only need to include the Draggabilly.js source to your site. There isn’t a need for other dependencies. You can grab the file from GitHub.

 <script src="js/draggabilly.pkgd.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

As for the rest, you’ll be working with some javascript function as per below.

Basic Dragging

You need to include the following snippet in your page so that the dragging can work.

 var elem = document.querySelector('#idHere'); var draggie = new Draggabilly( elem, { // options... });

The #idHere is the id you should put inside the HTML element you want to make draggable. While in the draggie variable, you can put in an option if you’d like. If you don’t need to have that option, you can also define the id from the elem variable.

For instance, if I have an id of #demo without any option, then I can write the snippet like so:

 var elem = document.querySelector('#demo'); var draggie = new Draggabilly('#demo');

Then inside the HTML, call the id of the element you wish turn draggable. The following is a basic example.

 <div class="demo-frame"> <div class="justDemo"> <div id="demo" class="relative"> <div class="centered">Drag me</div> </div> </div> </div>

There are many other ways to affect Draggabilly’s behavior. You can restrict the dragging to be only in the ‘y’ or ‘x’ axis like so:

 new Draggabilly( '#demo', { axis: 'x' });

Or you can add a handling option, which will specifiy the starting element of the drag interaction like so:

 var elem = document.querySelector('#demo'); new Draggabilly( elem, { handle: '.handle' });

This .handle option is useful when all inner elements like inputs and forms don’t need to be draggable. There are still many other options you can add like containments, grids, methods and events. Head over to dragabbilly’s official homepage to see the full documentation.

Final Thought

The dragging feature, in most cases, has little effect on web design but it’s still pretty important. It takes place most often in web apps or games. The simplicity of its installation and the variety of different dragging methods makes this a really handy tool to try out.

10 Useful Hashtag Tools For Social Media Marketing

Social media may be teeming with hashtags now but its power cannot be underestimated. Its usefulness can be seen by how information is spread and how it aids online searches. It is for this reason that if you are marketing using social media, you should consider employing hashtags in your marketing strategy. The hashtag is not entirely fail-proof.

tweetbinder

There are infamous cases on how hashtags can backfire, like what happened with the New York Police Department’s campaign to improve their image with #myNYPD. Instead of highlighting the NYPD in a positive light, Twitter users however used the tag to share incidences (and pictures) of police roughing up citizens.

However that’s nothing to worry about so long as you follow basic hashtag etiquette, and do enough research. Adhering to hashtag tips like keeping it short and testing them also helps to minimize the risk of your hashtag campaign failing. By using them strategically, you’ll be able to make hashtags work for you and your brand.

Why use hashtags for marketing

Hashtags are great for marketing purposes, for instance to inform others of your latest products, events and campaigns. It also helps you gain reach for your brand, increasing exposure and helping people easily find you and your brand. With hashtags, it is also easier to communicate with your audience and the networks within the same industry.

On top of that, you get to monitor who is talking about you by keeping track of your hashtags and even check in on your competitors. Best of all, the data you can gather are real-time and of great value in terms of market research. You can also cross over multiple social media platforms with the same hashtag, and best of all, you can find plenty of tools to help you hashtag more effectively and productively.

Hashtag Tools

Here are some of the hashtag tools you should consider using in your marketing campaign.

1. Hashtags.org

Not sure where to start out first? Search Hashtags.org for its extensive list of hashtags that are popular or currently trending. You’ll be able to find out what and which hashtags are already in existence as well as the analytics on when a particular hashtag is being tweeted most within 24 hours. Additionally if you need to know more about how to use hashtags, you can read some of their articles, available on the site.

2. Hashtagify.Me

Hashtags can branch out, and hashtagify.me will show you all the relevant and related hashtags to a particular keyword, in a mind-map like manner. When you hover over a related hashtag, you’ll be able to see how popular it is and how it relates to the main hashtag. You can even switch to "Advance Mode" to discover more associations or "Table Mode" if you prefer to view information in a more structured form.

3. Topsy

Need to know when a hashtag was first used? Twitter’s API would not be able to let you do that but Topsy’s API will. All you need to do is tweak the search settings and Topsy will do the rest for you. It further compiles tweets with photos, links and videos containing the hashtag you’re searching for as well as the analytics you desire. Topsy also tells you who are the influencers of a particular hashtag.

4. RiteTag

Not sure what to hashtag? RiteTag tells you which hashtag is more likely to be seen and used by others. When you compose a tweet with hastags, it will highlight them in either red, blue or green to indicate how high a chance your tweet has of being discovered. RiteTag will also recommend alternative hashtags that are more likely to be noticed.

5. TweetReach

How do you know if your hashtag is effective? By using TweetReach, you’ll be able to know if your hashtag is impactful during your campaign or event. It tells you if your hashtag is generating discussions, retweets, and most importantly, who saw your tweets. Simply enter the hashtag in the search. You can also use TweetReach to see who is talking about your brand.

6. Hashtracking

Want to keep track of the hashtag for your campaign or event? Hashtracking will be able to do that in real time. Some of the things it will keep track of are tweets, retweets, and who is contributing to the conversation. It will also provide graphs and charts as well as in-depth analysis which you can export and share.

7. TweetBinder

Can’t keep up with the many hashtags you are tracking? TweetBinder allows you to create "binders" for a particular hashtag or hashtags. A report will be generated to show the statistics of conversations, tweets, pictures, links and contributors surrounding that hashtag. Extremely useful for keeping track of your various campaigns and events, the data gathered can be used for future marketing references. You can even browse things by binders too.

8. TweetChat

See your hashtag trending and want to engage with others directly? Twitter’s @mentions or reply button may be the first thing you’ll go to but things tend to get messy when having a discussion with more than one person. TweetChat solves that and you can even pause the stream if the replies are coming in too fast. An additional tip is to create a hashtag just for chatting.

9. TagBoard

Most of the tools featured here are mainly for Twitter. TagBoard on the other hand, lets you track hashtags from five social media platforms; Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram and Vine. If you are marketing on various platforms, this will come in handy for seeing how your hashtag is doing. You can even create your own tagboard if the hashtag is still available.

Other tool: SocialMention.com

10. HootSuite

You are now ready to unleash your hashtag into the World Wide Web. There is just one snag: how do you post your content and hashtag across multiple social media sites at once? That is HootSuite’s strength. You can also pre-scedule posts as well as track your hashtag activity. If your competitors employ the same strategy of marketing on various sites, this is one of the better ways to keep track of them.

Get All Your Social Network Feeds In One Place With Feedient

Social media has undoubtedly become an integral part of our lives. Every day, we log on to our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, checking in on what’s happening across the world and amongst our circle of friends.

However, with so many social networks out there, and so much information being posted and uploaded to these networks, it can sometimes be a huge hassle to keep on top of what’s happening on your favorite networks. Fret not though, for help is here in the form of Feedient.

Feedient

Feedient is a free-to-use web application that provides a thorough overview of your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube feeds, all in one browser window. Feedient also lets you interact with these posts, and even lets you post to Facebook or Twitter (or both) directly from the application.

Getting Started With Feedient

First off, you’re going to have to register an account with Feedient. There’s no option to log in with any social media networks, so you’ll have to create a new account. Registration is simple enough, only requiring an email address and password.

Once you register, you’ll be immediately directed to Feedient’s Settings screen, which is where you add your social media accounts, manage active sessions and change Feedient’s language and password.

Accounts

Using Feedient

Once you’ve added your social network accounts, your social network feeds will be accessible from the Feeds view. Your feeds will be displayed side-by-side, with a column for each social media feed. You can also rearrange the columns; just mouse over the top of each column and then click and drag it to where you want the column to be.

Feeds

Feedient will display these feeds in a simplified design that eliminates most of the fluff while retaining all the information you need, namely the posts themselves.

Feedient lets you do more than just check your feeds, though; you can also do some of what you usually do on the individual social networks. For instance, you can Like and comment on Facebook and Instagram posts as well as reply, favorite and retweet Twitter tweets.

Actions

Clicking on any of the links below the post will expand that particular post, showing additional information such as retweets and comments, as well as letting you comment, retweet or reply directly from Feedient.

Expanded View

You can also post to Facebook and Twitter directly from Feedient. Just click on the green Compose button at the top of the sidebar and a Compose message window will appear.

Compose Message

By default, Feedient will post to both Twitter and Facebook (if you’ve connected both to your Feedient), but you can disable either of the two by clicking on either username.

YouTube is a bit different: clicking on a video will play it in a floating window, but you won’t be able to see or make comments, like or dislike videos, add videos to playlists and so on. All you’ll get is the video itself and the video description.

YouTube Playback

Given the fact that the YouTube feed support was only added on April 22, it’s probably safe to assume that the developers will add the ability to comment on and like or dislike YouTube videos directly from Feedient sometime in the future.

Conclusion

Feedient is currently still in open beta, so there will probably be some niggles and minor issues here and there, as well as some missing features – such as sharing Facebook posts and commenting on YouTube videos – that will hopefully be added as development continues. It’s still very usable though, and will prove invaluable if you’re a heavy user of the social networks it supports and want to be able to keep track of goings-on from one place.

A Guide To Understanding Android App Permissions (& How To Manage Them)

Apps dominate our usage of smartphones and while Apple’s App Store has stringent criteria for apps to get in, Google’s Play Store is relatively more lenient. As an Android app user, you should be aware of the type of data the apps you use are taking from you.

On top of that, you will need to start reading up on the "permission slips" you have been giving apps that you download to your phone, or risk opening yourself up to major privacy and security issues.

App Ops

In this guide, we will be highlighting some of the app permissions you need to pay more attention to, and which are valid permissions that apps are obligated to ask for.

With a bit of vigilance, it’s entirely possible to minimize risks by learning how to better manage your app permissions (and to revoke them if necessary). Here’s a look into Android app permissions and what to do about them.

What Are App Permissions?

First things first, Android app permissions aren’t requests, they’re declarations. Unless you’re root ed, you have no say – short of choosing to not install the app – in whether the app will receive all the permissions it requires.

When you install an app from the Play Store, you’ll get a pop up listing all the permissions that the app requires, things like access to your storage, phone calls, network communciation etc. Read through this list.

Play Store Permissions

It’s all too easy to treat the permissions list like an EULA (which nobody ever reads) but skipping over these permissions could mean the difference between having your data securely on your device or having all of it at the fingertips of unscrupulous app developers.

5 Permissions You Should Be Wary Of

There are a few permissions that you should be wary of, not because they’re necessarily dangerous, but because there could be wide-ranging repercussions if data from these permissions were to fall into the wrong hands. Note that these aren’t the only permissions you should worry about – it’s a start.

If you want to know more, check out the list and discussion of Android app permissions by AndroidForums.com user Alostpacket. There’s also a detailed list of permissions on the official Android Developers page. Most of the recapped information here comes from both resources.

1. Location

There are two types of location permissions that Android applications can require: "approximate location (network-based)" and "precise location (GPS and network-based)".

Location

What would apps need my precise location for? Well, navigation apps like Waze will require such information to work. Similarly social media applications want to include your location in photos and uploads. Crucially, applications which implement location-based advertising will also need access to such information. It’s just one of the many sacrifices you have to make when using a free, ad-supported app.

2. Phone Status And Identity

This is a bit of a problematic permission, because "read phone status and identity" encompasses everything from something as innocuous as needing to know when a phone call is coming in, to having access to crucially important data such as your device’s IMEI number.

Read Phone Status And Identity

While this permission is often safe, the potential for wrongdoing is huge, so do exercise caution when apps require this permission. If there doesn’t seem to be any real reason for the app to require this permission, it might be a good thing to think twice before installing it.

3. Read And Modify Your Contacts

These permission to "Modify your contacts, read your contacts" gives an app unfettered access to your contacts’ data. While both can be problematic, the "modify" permission is especially dangerous since it would let an app read all the contact information you have on your phone. This includes how often you communicate with particular contacts.

Read And Modify Your Contacts

SMS apps, contact management apps, dialer replacement apps and even some social media apps will need one or both of these applications, but apps without any social aspect to them have on reason to require this.

4. SMS And MMS-Related Permissions

These permissions could potentially cost you a lot of money, if malicious apps use these permissions to send illegitimate SMSes or tack on extra charges onto each SMS and MMS you send.

SMS Related Permissions

The "read your text messages" and "receive text messages permissions" can also potentially result in your privacy being compromised. If there’s no real reason for an app to require these permissions, avoid it.

However, there are perfectly valid reasons an app would require these permissions, especially if it’s an SMS app. Again, a bit of reasoning should save you from having to deal with any issues related to this permission.

5. Account-Related Permissions

"Find accounts on the device" lets the app check with Android’s built in Account Manager on whether you have any accounts on services such as Google, Facebook and so on.

"Use accounts on the device" lets the app ask for permission to use the account. Once this permission is granted, the app won’t have to request it again; the concern, of course, comes if the app is malicious and continues to do things in the background in your name.

Account-Related Permissions

Another related permission to watch out for is "create accounts and set passwords", which lets the app authenticate credentials. A malicious app can take advantage of this permission to get your password by phishing you.

Ways To Stay Safe

There are a few things you can do to stay on top of app security.

1. The best way to stay safe is not to immediately avoid any apps that require problematic permissions but instead, to look at the app itself and use reasoning to figure out whether the app really requires these permissions.

2. You can also send an email to the developer asking about the permissions. If the reply isn’t satisfactory, or if you don’t get a reply at all, then you should most probably give the app a miss.

3. You should also take advantage of the huge Android community if you’re unsure about the security of a particular app. Read reviews on the Play Store and check forums and Android-centric news sites to see if there have been any complaints about the app recently. It’s a bit of work, sure, but better be safe than sorry.

Managing App Permissions

If you’ve let apps have access to any of your accounts such as Facebook or Google, it’d be a good idea to go to your account settings and manage your account permissions, if the website has such a feature.

Google Account Permissions

You can also check what permissions certain apps have by going into Settings > Apps. Just select an app and scroll down to see the permissions it has.

Permissions Manager Apps

You can also use an app such as Permission Explorer, which lets you filter by categories, apps and permissions, and can give you a much more detailed breakdown of the permissions granted to the app. Other similar apps you can try are Permissions Observatory and App Permissions.

App Info And Permission Explorer

Regardless of the app you choose, spending some time going through the permissions of apps currently installed on your Android device should help you establish whether there are any apps with problematic permissions that need to be revoked or perhaps even uninstalled entirely.

Revoking App Permissions

Once you’ve found some offending apps, it’s time to decide on a course of action. There’s currently no built-in way to manage app permissions in the latest version of Android, since Google chose to remove the AppOps feature from Android 4.4.2.

However, if you’re still running Android 4.3, it wouldn’t hurt to give AppOps a go to see if it helps you access the built-in permissions manager.

App Ops

If you’re running stock, unrooted 4.4.2 (or a version prior to 4.3), you’re pretty much out of luck when it comes to revoking app permissions short of completely uninstalling the application. However, if you are rooted, then you have a few more options.

Permissions Manager Apps (Rooted)

If you have the Xposed Framework installed, you can give XPrivacy a go. XPrivacy is one of the best permissions manager applications available, letting you tweak, block and revoke almost every permission an app might require. You can also use the XPrivacy Installer to help you install both Xposed Framework and XPrivacy itself.

XPrivacy

If you’re willing to install a completely new ROM, or plan to do so anyway, there are also certain custom ROMs that come with permission management features built-in.

The popular CyanogenMod has a Privacy Guard feature which, as of last year, comes with Android 4.3′s AppOps integrated into it. Other ROMs such as Purity ROM also have a similar feature.

CyanogenMod Privacy Guard

Conclusion

It’s hard to deny that, by default at least, Android’s privacy and security settings are a bit lacking. Between occasionally confusing permission names, to an inability to selectively grant permissions, this is definitely something that Android should work on.

However, even with these issues, it’s still entirely possible to stay on top of things and ensure the security of your data by being vigilant about the apps you install and the permissions that these apps require. After all, it’s your data on your phone – you have control.
